It is a structured education programme that teaches staff how to handle personal data securely and lawfully. Is GDPR training mandatory for employees?

The GDPR does not impose a standalone training obligation on every employer, but training is how most organisations meet obligations that are mandatory. Article 39(1)(b) makes awareness-raising and staff training a formal task of the Data Protection Officer. Articles 24 and 32 require appropriate organisational measures to protect personal data, and supervisory authorities including the CNIL and the ICO treat staff training as one of those measures. In practice, an organisation that cannot show its people were trained will struggle to demonstrate accountability during an audit or after a breach.

How often should employees receive GDPR training?

The GDPR sets no fixed frequency. The established practice is to train new joiners during onboarding and run a refresher each year, with additional sessions when your processing activities, tools, or regulatory obligations change materially. Continuous awareness is what keeps pace with evolving privacy laws and emerging cyber threats.

Is GDPR training required for non-EU employees?

In most cases, yes. The GDPR applies extraterritorially under Article 3. If your organisation processes the personal data of individuals in the European Union, the employees handling that data fall within the same expectations regardless of where they are based.
